What is Tawakkul & How Do We Understand It? | Shaykh Ibn Uthaymeen

Tawakkul (trust in Allah) is one of the most profound acts of the heart — balancing reliance on Allah with taking the means. Shaykh Ibn Uthaymeen رحمه الله beautifully explained how true tawakkul combines sincere faith with responsible effort. In this post, we explore what tawakkul truly means and how to apply it in our daily lives.

    Question:

What is the correct understanding of having Tawakkul (reliance) upon Allah (The Mighty & Sublime)?

    Answer:

The correct understanding of Tawakkul is that a person is sincere in his reliance upon Allah, meaning that he truly believes in relying upon Allah (The Mighty & Sublime) alone in all affairs.

This includes his worship, dealings, habits, actions and circumstances. He relates all of his life's affairs to Allah (The Mighty & Sublime), and that none of his affairs would be easy if Allah had not made them easy for him.

Furthermore, a person must have sincere belief in relying upon Allah and should think well of Allah, such that he provides ease for him in all his affairs. A person should not become proud of himself by thinking that an accomplishment or event occurred only due to his own influence and that he was the sole initiator of it, since these thoughts are indeed dangerous.

This is why the scholars have defined Tawakkul as:

Having true sincerity in reliance upon Allah, (Who brings benefits and compels harms) with certainty and full trust in Allah alone, while taking the necessary measures providing they are permitted according to Islamic law.

Is the Dunya Your Main Concern? | Sunan Ibn Mājah 4105

Seek the Akhira. The Dunya will follow.

Imam Ibn Kathir رحمه الله said:

"This dunya flees from the one who chases it, and chases the one who flees from it."

    [Tafsir Ibn Kathir 3/197]

    Sunan Ibn Majah 4105

Abdur-Rahman bin Aban bin ‘Uthman bin ‘Affan narrated that his father said:
“Zaid bin Thabit departed from Marwan at mid-day. I said: ‘He has not sent him out at this time of the day except for something he asked.’ So I asked him, and he said: ‘He asked me about some things we heard from the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say:

“Whoever is focused only on this world, Allah will confound his affairs and make him fear poverty constantly, and he will not get anything of this world except that which has been decreed for him. Whoever is focused on the Hereafter, Allah will settle his affairs for him and make him feel content with his lot, and his provision and worldly gains will undoubtedly come to him.”

Dua of Gratitude Before Sleeping | Sahih Muslim 2715

    Reference: Sahih Muslim 2715

Anas reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying:

When you go to bed, say:" Praise is due to Allah Who fed us, provided us drink, sufficed us and provided us with shelter, for many a people there is none to suffice and none to provide shelter."

    Dua:

    Transliteration:

Al-ḥamdu lillāhi alladhī aṭ‘amanā wa saqānā wa kafānā wa āwānā, fa kam mimman lā kāfiya lahu wa lā muʾwiyā.

    Reflection:

Before sleeping, taking a moment to thank Allah reminds us of His countless blessings. Sleep is a gift, life is a blessing, and every breath is mercy. Saying this dua with sincerity helps you end the day in gratitude.

Some of the righteous Salaf (predecessors) used to say:
"If you want to know the blessings that Allāh has bestowed upon you, close your eyes." Look at how He He has blessed you with hearing, sight, reason, religious commitment, children, provision, a good life.

Remember, the blessings of Allah are abundant — your food, health, family, and faith are all signs of His mercy. Make it a habit to say Alhamdulillah.

  • How to organise your time for Barakah Blog_264.png

How to Organise Your Time for Barakah? Insights from Sheikh Uthaymeen

Time is a trust from Allah ﷻ, and how we use it determines the blessing we receive in our days. Many of us seek barakah in our time, yet struggle to find balance between worship, work, and rest. Sheikh Muhammad ibn al-Uthaymeen رحمه الله offered simple yet profound advice on how a believer can organise their time so that Allah places blessing within it.

    Here are his words:

Organise your time so that Allah may bestow blessing upon it.
Organise it, but do not make this arrangement rigid.
Rather, let it be flexible according to the circumstances.
Sometimes, what is less good may become better than what is good.
But organise yourself and your work.

The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said:
"The most beloved deeds to Allah are those that are consistent, even if they are small."

For example, set aside an hour to read the Book of Allah.
And an hour to read from the Hadiths of the Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him.
An hour to reflect on the meanings of the Quran and the Hadiths.
An hour to contemplate what you have done during your day and what you left undone.

Organise yourself so that Allah may bless your days and your hours.

    Closing Remarks:

Sheikh Ibn al-Uthaymeen’s رحمه الله reminder is timeless: when we organise our hours with sincerity and balance, Allah ﷻ places barakah in our time. True productivity is not about cramming more tasks into the day, but about filling our moments with purpose—connecting worship, work, and reflection. By following this guidance, we can transform our daily routines into a source of blessing, consistency, and peace, making every hour count in both our dunya and akhirah.

How to Easily Calculate Zakat: Sheikh Uthaymeen’s Guide

A translation of a profound yet simple method for easily calculating Zakat by Sheikh Muhammad ibn al-Uthaymin

"If you have wealth and want to know the amount of zakat (you should give), Then the matter. I mean, is easy.

Divide the money by 40 and the result is the zakat.

So if someone has 40,000 dirhams, how much is their zakat?

    Divide 40 by 40 is 1.

    So 1,000 Riyal.

    And from 120,000, 3,000 Riyal.

    And so on.

Point being, if you want to take out the zakat divide what you have of wealth, meaning gold, silver, and business over 40, the result is the zakat."

Get a Free TEFL Certificate (Yes, Really) – What Barakah Jobs Users Need to Know

Teaching English Abroad or Online? Here’s a Helpful (and Free) First Step.

If you're aiming to work as an English teacher—whether online or overseas—most employers expect you to have a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certificate. Normally, this costs anywhere from $200 to $1000+, but Barakah Jobs has discovered a free TEFL course offered by TeacherRecord that might help you get started with zero upfront cost.

But before you rush to enroll, here’s a fair breakdown of the pros and cons, so you can decide if it's the right move for you.

    The Positives

    100% Free – No Catch
Yes, the TEFL course is completely free. This is ideal for those who are just starting out or can’t currently afford a more expensive option.

    Quick and Flexible
The course is self-paced and can be completed quickly—some users finish it in as little as a few weeks. Perfect if you're trying to fast-track an application or job opportunity.

    Good for Entry-Level Jobs
For many entry-level online teaching jobs, especially those based in China or other parts of Asia, this certificate is often “good enough” to meet the requirements.

    Digital Certificate Included
Once you pass, you get a digital certificate at no cost. No need to pay extra for verification or downloads.

    Improves & refreshes your grammar
It’s a solid grammar refresher—because let’s face it, most of us know what sounds right, but we’ve forgotten the rules or were never taught them properly. This course explains it clearly, often better than school ever did.

    The Limitations

    Limited Accreditation
Unlike premium TEFL providers (such as CELTA, Trinity CertTESOL, or Level 5 TEFL courses), this certificate does not carry internationally recognized accreditation. Some employers—especially in the Middle East or Europe—may not accept it.

Not TESOL, CELTA, or Level 5 Equivalent
While labeled “TEFL,” this course is not equivalent to higher-level or government-recognized training programs. If you're serious about building a long-term teaching career, you may eventually need to upgrade.

    Mostly Theory-Based
The course is mostly reading and quizzes. It lacks live training, teaching practice, or tutor support—features found in paid programs that build real confidence and competence.

    Who Should Take It?

This free TEFL certificate is best for:

    • Barakah Jobs users looking for their first online job

    • Those wanting to try teaching without a financial commitment

    • Applicants targeting entry-level online platforms

    • Teachers planning to upgrade later, but need something now

For Barakah Jobs users seeking halal, meaningful teaching opportunities online or in reputable institutes across China and Taiwan, this free TEFL certificate offers a valuable, accessible credential that aligns with their commitment to trustworthy, ethical work while opening doors in respected educational settings.

If you're applying to Saudi Arabia, the UAE, or other high-standard employers, you may need a more robust TEFL or CELTA certificate in the future.

    Final Thoughts

Getting a free TEFL certificate from TeacherRecord is a practical, no-risk first step—especially if you're exploring the world of online education or working abroad. It’s not the most recognized option on the market, but it opens doors where otherwise you may have had none.

Use it as a stepping stone, not a final destination.

Have Tawakkul But Tie Your Camel. At-Tirmidhi 2517

A short yet powerful hadith from Anas bin Malik (رضي الله عنه) where the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) teaches the balance between trust in Allah and taking action:

    “اعْقِلْهَا وَتَوَكَّلْ”

“Tie it and rely (upon Allah).”

Anas bin Malik (رضي الله عنه) narrated that a man said:

“O Messenger of Allah! Shall I tie it and rely (upon Allah), or leave it loose and rely (upon Allah)?”
He said (ﷺ): “Tie it and rely (upon Allah).”

Ramadan and Lalyatul-Qadr Poem by Ibn Rajab Al Hanbali

Arabic poetry composed by Ibn Rajab about Ramadan and Night of al-Qadr

    English translation:

The years have past so carelessly and in jest and in loss

How much have I lost from what I spent in the days throughout my life

What do I have to say about my loss in my life, is there any excuse?

How much have we been heedless of the duty of praise and gratefulness [to Allah]

Did Allah not choose us for a special month, and what a month it sure is

A month in which Ar-Rahman revealed the best of all speech

Is it like any month? in it is the Night of Decree

How many narrations have come authentic about the reward in that night

We have been informed through the trustworthy that’s it is to be sought on the odd nights

Glad tidings to the one who seeks it in the last ten nights

In it the Angels descend with light and with mercy

And he [Allah] has said {Peace it is — until the rise of dawn} [Al-Qadr:5]

So secure it, indeed it is from the most precious of those things saved

How many are freed in it from the fire yet they don’t know.

    Ramadan: the Month of Forgiveness

    Ramadan: the Month of Forgiveness

Ramadan is a month of great virtue, Barakah and a month of forgiveness. It is essential we make the most of this blessed month and make it a month of Ibadah (worship), rectification and repentance.

Abu Hurayrah (RA) reported that the Prophet ﷺ said: "When Ramadan enters, the gates of Paradise are opened, the gates of Hellfire are closed and the devils are chained." (Al-Bukhari and Muslim)

Narrated Abu Huraira

The Prophet ﷺ said, "Whoever established prayers on the night of Qadr out of sincere faith and hoping for a reward from Allah, then all his previous sins will be forgiven; and whoever fasts in the month of Ramadan out of sincere faith, and hoping for a reward from Allah, then all his previous sins will be forgiven."

    "‏ مَنْ قَامَ لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ إِيمَانًا وَاحْتِسَابًا غُفِرَ لَهُ مَا تَقَدَّمَ مِنْ ذَنْبِهِ، وَمَنْ صَامَ رَمَضَانَ إِيمَانًا وَاحْتِسَابًا غُفِرَ لَهُ مَا تَقَدَّمَ مِنْ ذَنْبِهِ ‏"‏‏
